In 1962 the California Courts of Appeal, with courts in other states, began to struggle with the working definition of “actual cash value.” Injustice was perceived to have been imposed on insureds by the working definition, and the Courts attempted to cure what was felt to be a wrong. The struggle in California is instructive to claims adjusters in any state.
